On Sept. 7, 2016, the London Design Biennale kicked off in the Somerset House. The Shenzhen, China pavilion presented the project curated by URBANUS with the title of “DenCity – A Reachable Utopia in Shenzhen.”Liu Xiaodu, founding partner of URBANUS, delivered a keynote speech called “DenCity” at the opening ceremony of Shenzhen Pavilion.

With the population growing from 300,000 to 17 million, Shenzhen transformed from a fishing village into a metropolis and become the dreamland for the young and ambitious in 1980s and 1990s. With appealing newcomers by its entrepreneurial spirit, the creative city has expanded not only to the limit of its land resources, but also to the ceiling of affordable housing for the immigrants. What’s the solution of such a rapid growing metropolis? Drawing inspiration from the idea of utopia, the designers are working on a new and sustainable living/working environment.
